Introduction
Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure the health and survival of infants. Every year, World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated from August 1st to 7th to raise awareness and strengthen support for breastfeeding at all levels of society.
In 2025, the theme “Enabling Breastfeeding: Making a Difference for Working Parents” focuses on the critical need to support mothers—particularly those balancing work responsibilities—with proper breastfeeding policies and community backing.
Why Breastfeeding Matters
- Nutritional: Provides all nutrients a baby needs in the first 6 months.
- Immunological: Boosts the baby’s immune system.
- Emotional: Enhances bonding between mother and child.
- Economic: Reduces household costs compared to formula feeding.
Breastfeeding in Ghana: Current Status
In Ghana, about 52% of infants under six months are exclusively breastfed. This is encouraging but still below the WHO target of 70%. Many mothers—especially in rural areas—face challenges like lack of support, stigma, and work-related barriers.
2025 Theme Focus: Supporting Working Parents
The theme emphasizes workplace policies such as:
- Paid maternity leave (at least 14 weeks)
- Lactation breaks and breastfeeding rooms at work
- Flexible return-to-work policies
How Ghana Can Improve Breastfeeding Rates
1. Government
- Enforce maternity leave laws
- Incentivize breastfeeding-friendly workplaces
2. Health Facilities
- Provide lactation counseling
- Train midwives in breastfeeding support
3. Workplaces
- Set up private breastfeeding spaces
- Allow flexible schedules
4. Communities and Families
- Normalize public breastfeeding
- Offer emotional support to new mothers
Breastfeeding Myths to Dispel
- ❌ "Formula is just as good as breast milk." → ✅ Breast milk is uniquely tailored.
- ❌ "Small breasts don’t produce enough milk." → ✅ Size doesn’t affect milk supply.
- ❌ "You can’t breastfeed if you’re sick." → ✅ In most cases, breastfeeding is safe and beneficial.
Final Thoughts
World Breastfeeding Week 2025 is a time to act. Let’s make sure every mother in Ghana and beyond receives the support she needs to give her baby the best start in life.
